A Short Primer on the History of Magick

Magick is the study and application of energetic forces of the universe. People define it in various ways, but it always comes back to energy.

As a practice, Magick employs mental training, concentration, and systematic rituals that help to program the mind. And the purpose of magick is to alter the self and/or the environment according to the will of the magician.

Over the ages, many systems have been developed to help us control our thoughts. A great amount of dogma has also been kicked around in an attempt to make us into better people. Magick (the occult kind, spelled with a ‘k’) is one of the oldest and most general of these systems.

Most of the magick we encounter today comes to us from ancient Egypt and Chaldea. The Chinese, Hindus, and Tibetans also developed their own unique types of magick.

Egyptian priests locked up western magick for thousands of years, and then the rise of Christianity kept the magickal arts suppressed. It wasn’t until medieval Europe that alchemists and Cabalists rediscovered magickal knowledge. Only during the past hundred years or so has western culture been open-minded enough to permit widespread investigation of the subject. And it’s only been since the start of the twentieth century that science has shown much interest in it all.

The more that I’ve read, researched and explored magick, the deeper that I see its history goes. Two of my favorite books on the topic are:

Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Ceremonial Magick
The Secret Teachings of All Ages: An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy
