How to Craft a Spell

Writing your own spells is a practice that every Witch aspires to do. The ability to craft your own spells gives you an advantage over “ready-made” spells that might you can find in other places, because you’re putting your own emotion and energy into the spell. There’s nothing more powerful than intention of the creator.

Through the process of its unique creation, your spells will be special and meaningful to you, and that is the secret of casting successful spells.

So here’s my begginer’s guide to crafting your own spells:

Step 1: Choose Your Tools

The ingredients, correspondences, and tools that you use are purely dependent upon the traditional magickal properties those materials possess, as well as their meanings to you as symbols. As such, your own connection to the tools is more important than how OTHERS define it! This means that you should choose things that are connected to you. Gather the materials that feel correct; what are you drawn to for this particular spell? What represents the results that you’re going for?

Step 2: Write the Spell

There are different ways to craft the wording of your spells. A spell can be as simple as a two-line charge to enforce your will or easy rhyming couplets (a favorite of mine as this helps to better remember the words without referring back to written instructions) or extravagant, eloquent, and lengthy prose to charge the spell to the energy of your will. You could also just simply repeat or chant a single word over and over again.

Everything that you put into the spell—the ingredients, the words, the time of day—come together with your desire, emotion, and belief to bring about your desired outcome (sometimes within a day).

(A quick warning: you may want to steer clear of casting spells to harm or control other people in any way. Doing so not only goes against Witchcraft Ethics and Responsibilities…I mean, who the f wrote those???…but also because the energy that you have available for magick is much better used to focus on YOURSELF rather than others. Yes…some people deserve vengeance and revenge, but I much prefer to rise up than to try and knock folks down, ya know what I mean?)

Step 3: Put It All Together:

Now, here are the things you will want to do while creating your spell: Make sure to write down an outline for the spell on paper so you won’t forget anything. Even if your spell sounds silly as you write it, keep writing. As long as it’s coming from your heart, and is for an intense desire that you have, you’re golden. Unless it is an emergency situation, plan out the best timing for when to cast the spell. You will need to take into consideration planetary influences, moon phases, etc.

When you have finished your spell, write it down in your Book of Shadows.

Record the results of your spell and any feelings you had while casting it in your Book of Shadows.

Revise the spell as necessary, as you figure out what went right and what went wrong.
