I’ve been thinking about writing this article for a while now. While I don’t claim to be a chakra expert, I’ve been studying them for over 15 years. My journey into the world of chakras began in my late twenties when I first learned that colors appearing in tarot readings could be linked to specific chakras. That connection piqued my curiosity and sent me down a path of discovery—one that continues to unfold even today.
At first, I expected to find a simple, universal explanation of chakras since they are widely discussed in spiritual and energy healing circles. However, like many aspects of spirituality, I soon realized that chakras are both structured and deeply personal. There is a general understanding of their role in energy flow, but each person experiences them in their own unique way.
In this article, I want to share my interpretation of chakras and how they function within our energy system. As a visual learner, I often imagine chakras as gateways within our body—specific energy centers where energy collects and either flows freely or becomes blocked. The health of each chakra depends on whether that energy moves smoothly from one point to the next.
The History and Structure of Chakras
Historically, ancient texts referenced five primary energy points, but today, most teachings recognize seven chakras aligned along the spine, from the base of the tailbone to the crown of the head. Interestingly, I’ve always wondered why the traditional system starts at the tailbone instead of the feet. The best reasoning I’ve come across is that many spiritual practices involve sitting meditation, where the base of the spine connects to the ground, making it a natural starting point for energy flow.
Over the coming weeks, I will be diving deep into each chakra, but for now, here’s a general overview of the seven major chakras and their meanings:
🌿 The Seven Chakras & Their Meanings
1. Root Chakra (Muladhara) – Foundation & Security
- Color: Red
- Location: Base of the spine
- Associated With: Stability, survival, and grounding
- Spiritual Connection: This chakra is linked to our basic needs for safety, security, and survival—similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. If this chakra is weak or blocked, we may feel anxious, ungrounded, or fearful.
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) – Creativity & Emotions
- Color: Orange
- Location: Lower abdomen (just below the navel)
- Associated With: Creativity, pleasure, and emotional expression
- Spiritual Connection: A balanced sacral chakra allows for healthy emotional boundaries and uninhibited creative flow. If blocked, it may manifest as emotional instability or creative blocks.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – Confidence & Personal Power
- Color: Yellow
- Location: Upper abdomen (around the stomach)
- Associated With: Self-esteem, willpower, and identity
- Spiritual Connection: This chakra governs our inner strength, personal identity, and ability to take action. When balanced, it fosters confidence and motivation. If imbalanced, we may struggle with self-doubt or control issues.
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata) – Love & Compassion
- Color: Green or Pink
- Location: Center of the chest
- Associated With: Love, compassion, and relationships
- Spiritual Connection: This chakra bridges the physical and spiritual realms, radiating love for both self and others. An open heart chakra allows us to give and receive love freely, while a blocked one may lead to feelings of loneliness or resentment.
5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – Communication & Truth
- Color: Blue
- Location: Throat
- Associated With: Expression, truth, and authenticity
- Spiritual Connection: The throat chakra is responsible for honest communication and self-expression. When in harmony, it empowers us to speak our truth with confidence. If blocked, it can lead to difficulty expressing emotions or feeling unheard.
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) – Intuition & Spiritual Awareness
- Color: Indigo
- Location: Between the eyebrows
- Associated With: Intuition, insight, and inner wisdom
- Spiritual Connection: Often called the seat of intuition, this chakra helps us connect to spirit guides and higher consciousness. A balanced third eye chakra enhances clarity, while an imbalanced one may cause confusion or detachment from reality.
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – Universal Connection & Enlightenment
- Color: Purple, White, Gold, or Rainbow
- Location: Top of the head
- Associated With: Higher consciousness and spiritual connection
- Spiritual Connection: The crown chakra is our gateway to divine energy and universal wisdom. When open, we feel aligned with the universe and our higher self. A blocked crown chakra can lead to spiritual disconnection or existential doubt.
